Making something from nothing

My work combines elements of pop and primitive art. The overall forms are intentionally simple, while layered paint applications and sculptural details elevate the three-dimensional shapes and give each piece its own personality. The animal sculptures often carry a playful—sometimes mischievous—demeanor.

I upcycle household recycled materials, such as plastic bags, transforming them into three-dimensional figures through a paper-mâché–like process. Details are added through hand-drawn elements and wire, enhancing expression and character.

I embrace the quirks, irregularities, and organic, handmade textures that naturally emerge from these materials. Each piece is finished with a combination of traditional and spray acrylic paints to create rich, unique color surfaces. The completed works are housed in painted wooden boxes or mounted on stable bases.

While some themes may initially read as childlike, “adults” are often drawn to the subtle mischievousness behind each smile.

Behind the Art: My "Taper" Mâche Process

Since I can’t be here in person, here is a quick look at how these characters come to life using my unique "Taper" Mâche technique:

  • 1. Upcycled Sculpting: I shape the core using recycled plastic shopping bags and masking tape. I love this eco-friendly element—and skipping wet paste means no drying time, leaving me free to play and experiment.

  • 2. Smoothing the Form: Once the shape is just right, I burnish down all the edges to create a solid, durable canvas.

  • 3. Layered Color: I apply acrylic spray paints, layering colors and using the natural splatter effect to create rich, organic textures.

  • 4. Personality & Polish: I hand-draw the eyes, mouth, and highlights to give each creature its unique soul, then seal it all with a gloss varnish.

Take a closer look—every piece is a one-of-a-kind, upcycled original! Thank you for supporting handmade art.
